Wondering if you should do a "first look" for your wedding?

What is a first look?

A "first look" is a moment prior to the wedding ceremony where the bride and groom can see each other for the first time dressed in their wedding attire. It is a relatively recent modern wedding tradition. By this point in the day, the bride is already wearing her wedding dress, the makeup is done, and all the craziness of the morning and getting ready has passed. The groom will be dressed in his tux. It's almost like a little mini-wedding all on its own.

Why should I do a first look?

One of the more obvious reasons is that it is one more opportunity to get some great photos of the bride and groom. First looks are often packed with real emotion and it captures a wonderful moment between the couple. It also helps to get some of those pre-wedding nerves out of the way. It allows the day to slow down a bit and give you a moment to relax.

A first look is a moment when you can really get some time to just enjoy each other's company. Usually, there will be few if any friends and guests present. There will be lots of time with all of them later, but this moment is truly just about the two of you.

Another nice thing about the first look photo session is that you will both look your absolute best. You haven't been spending time standing outside in the sun, haven't been dancing. Your faces are fresh, your clothing is still spotless. Your hair is still exactly where you want it to be.

Another great thing about first looks is that we often will have time to do additional photographs beyond just the first look. We can use this time to get some of your couples photos done, giving you more time to enjoy your guests later in the day.

When does a first look happen?

Ordinarily, within an hour or so prior to the wedding ceremony. It can also be a bit earlier if you want to leave some extra time for additional photos. This allows more time for the formals and bride and groom photos. Those would normally happen in the hour between the ceremony and the reception (cocktail hour). This will give you a bit more time to mingle with your guests prior to the reception.

Doesn't it spoil the wedding?

I don't think it does at all. There will always be some genuine emotion to capture when the bride walks down the aisle. It really is a personal decision, and so talk to your soon-to-be spouse and decide what is best for you.

Can we kiss during the first look?

If you want to, go for it! There really aren't any rules when it comes to first looks.

What can I do to make our first look special?

The first look is often a great time for any letters or gifts that you have for each other. Some adventurous couples might also use it as a good time for a prank (surely you have all seen a best man in a bridal gown lol). First looks are definitely a time when having two photographers is beneficial. Reactions and emotions can happen fast, and we want to be sure to capture them.

Does a first look cost extra?

No. A first look photo session is part of your wedding package. I will already be there and if you want to do a first look, I'd be happy to help you set it up.
